Nathan K. is a Congolese migrant struggling with serious housing problems and an excessive passion for the silence that comes right before the punchline—and the laughter that follows. It’s not easy being the first Black stand-up comedian in Italy: you can never tell whether the audience is laughing at your jokes or just humoring you because of the color of your skin. But Nathan doesn’t really care. He learned early on that survival means making compromises—including getting used to the idea of marrying an accommodating older woman to finally obtain the longed-for citizenship. That is, until he meets Diana (27), and Nathan’s life suddenly becomes much, much more complicated.
